I originally intended for these to just be on twitter, but since someone reposted them here, I thought that I might as well post them myself. (That person and I have talked about it BTW, and we’re cool.) That way, the tweet I based these on can be credited here as well!
“What.” Sometimes Mila Babicheva does this thing with her mouth where she speaks and it sounds a lot like she’s going to turn into Lilia Baranovskaya in fifty years, capable of rendering men speechless with single-syllable interjections just like this one.
“Yuuri,” Victor explains. Yakov is busy yelling at Georgi, so he and Mila have caught a break for water. “It’s his birthday and he keeps wearing that hideous brown coat that’s puffy and it swallows him up, and the winter is cold here, and don’t you think he’d look good in a navy Burberry?” I am thinking of him, he’s trying to say. I want him to be cozy here because he’s given up so much to be here to be with me. I want him to be happy.
He’s also thinking about that one photoshoot he conned Yuuri into for the sponsors a few months ago; the two of them in designer-wear, lounging on a couch. About how good Yuuri looks when he’s not so afraid to show himself. “Maybe the whole ensemble,” he adds, when he notices that Mila looks utterly unconvinced by this line of thinking. “Suit. Boots. A scarf. Gloves …”
“You’re buying Yuuri clothes for his birthday,” she echoes.
“What, you don’t think it’s a good idea?”
Mila shrugs. She’s so nonchalant about everything. That’s the difference between them: Victor only ever pretends to be nonchalant, but under the surface his thoughts are ever-whirling, ever contemplating how he’s being received and what he has to say next to get precisely the reaction he wants. Mila, on the other hand, just is. Whatever other concerns or cares she has, perception isn’t one of them. “Your funeral,” she quips, and before Victor can argue that Yuuri isn’t the sort of person who would murder him over a birthday present, Yakov’s shouting for them both to get back to work.
Yakov would commit a murder, probably, Victor thinks, and he hopes that’s the end of it.
