Being an artist is lonely work

You often hear how writing is lonely, but I have to say, being an artist is also pretty lonely. Even if you are successful in getting your work out there, there is often very little conversation. It feels most days like you give give give and receive very little.

Lots of folks may disagree and say, “oh quit your whining; you get lots of notes.” But let me tell you, unlike stories where people comment, very few engage with art beyond a look and a like. The most you’ll get is sometimes just a “pretty” or “cute”. There are lots of writer asks of the tell-me-about variety but no one really asks an artist about their favorite work or the meaning behind a picture. We all take for granted that a picture is a thousand words and so there’s no need for more words.

Artists put a lot into their work; we’d love to hear your reactions and feelings! Please encourage your favorite artists and talk to them! Some simple things you can do:

  • Write how their work made you feel in the tags
  • Reblog with a caption that came to mind
  • Comment with your favorite aspect of the image
  • Ask them what picture they’re most proud of
  • Ask them why they picked their colors
  • Ask them what their favorite thing to draw is
  • Just say hello

And I want to thank a few people who I see continually go out of their way to give their thoughts. You know, I’d never thought about it that way, and I love that you pointed it out, @littorella! As a writer, I know how amazing it is when we get asks about our work, so we should def extend that to artists! ❤️❤️❤️ Let’s do it, everyone!!!

What if Tony accidentally says something that sounds just a little too much like a vine or some pop culture meme and Peter goes on autopilot and quotes or or whatever and Tony’s just like w hat the fcuk??

Tony’s like there talking with his kid and goes “Ugh, there’s only one thing worse than mandatory meetings” then Peter just replies without even looking up from his textbook “A Child!”
